Emma Grimwood looks forward the final season of Lost
“The OC has nothing on this.”
I am absolutely wetting myself with excitement about the final Lost series. It is going to be dramatic, funny, stressful, tense, and probably depressing.
OK, I don’t actually know that many people who stuck with this hugely successful American drama after it moved to Sky; many got bored by the somewhat perplexing and highly convoluted plotline, abandoning their viewing a few series ago. Some might say six seasons is excessive, but I have never been so excited about a final season in my life. The OC has nothing on this.
I won’t stray into details, in case any of you are suddenly seized with a wild desire to watch the entire drama so far from the beginning (that’s over 100 hours of joy), but most people will know the basic premise of ‘Lost’. Plane crashes on island. Confusion. Sand. Polar bears. Smoke monsters. A varied and mostly attractive group of survivors. A sarcastic Southern hick. An assertive and manly doctor. A feisty freckle-nosed girl-on-the-run torn between the two. An overweight but oh-so-funny lottery winner. A token British drug-addict rock star . An ex-cripple. “The Others”. The hatch. The bad guy who everybody loves (seriously. I know several men who would happily marry him.). Mystery and drama. And most importantly, an unraveling plotline that just keeps on going.
“Aside from the obvious excitement, there is a lot of room for scepticism…”
Flashbacks are rife in the first few seasons and so the next logical addition was ‘flashforwards’. However, the coming series sees the exciting introduction of, wait for it, an alternative reality. Yes, all those characters we knew and loved (well, mostly) who met unfortunate, tragic ends will grace our screens once more. This premise has the potential to be quite confusing for simple brains like mine, as the combinations of flashfowards and flashbacks became a little baffling and so adding an extra dimension (along with the present-day action, of course) will quite possibly reduce viewers to a bewildered heap on the sofa. And if you miss a scene in ‘Lost’, you’ll have absolutely no idea of what is going on; it’s very likely that within those three seconds a character will be dead and the island will have blown up.
Aside from the obvious excitement, there is a lot of room for scepticism; many questions are still unanswered… can the writers (who claim they have always known how the series would end) pull every loose thread together, and leave us with a feeling of satisfaction? I doubt it. I expect the final scene of the final episode of the final series will leave many a viewer gawping at the iconic ‘LOST’ end-shot, only to shout angrily at the television/computer (illegal web streaming is not endorsed by D21 of course. Ahem). To be honest though, to end it prettily isn’t really a very ‘Lost’ thing to do. Every time a character looks as if he or she will have a glimpse of happiness, the writers cruelly whisk it away. If the writers have created a smug happy ending, I suspect there will be similar cries of rage echoing from all corners of the earth. They can’t win, really. And that is how we like it.
So I eagerly await the unfolding of this series’ events. I understand that by the time it is all over I will have devoted over five days of my life to watching this show. But I don’t care! And neither should you. Sure, you could be working instead. Or helping the community. But what’s an hour a week of watching an over-the-top but incredibly exciting programme? The score is divine, the scenery beautiful, the acting excellent, the plotline enthralling. It will make you happy. It will add to your life. You can post facebook statuses/stati that only other ‘Lost’ fans will understand.
See you in another life, brother.
