Dominic Wakeford takes on the Oscars! Best Picture and Best Director

The Oscars is often viewed as an easy institution to criticise, seeming out of touch with current movie trends and often favouring cosy mediocrity over true artistry, and yet it still manages to cause the entertainment industry to go into effective meltdown for a couple of months at the start of each year.

TCMC’s ‘How to Succeed in Business, Without Really Trying’

It is extremely difficult to reproduce such a popular piece of musical theatre as ‘How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying’ as a college musical – especially with the 1961 original earning seven Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and others, but this production was far from pretentious and had an air about it of college wit and modesty – TCMS made it their own.

DOE’s ‘The Poisoned Kiss’ by Ralph Vaughn Williams

To use the words of another reviewer; you really have to wonder what Vaughan Williams was on when he wrote ‘The Poisoned Kiss’. Written over a prolonged length of time, this rarely-performed opera is a curious mish-mash of songs, linked tenuously together by dialogue, creating a patchy and incoherent story line. The use of rhyming couplets throughout, although with no metre or structure, adds to the farcical feel of the piece.

FoodCycle; the food revolution in Durham

Half past five. Closing time for most shops on Market Square. If you’re meandering to Tesco after a late lecture, chances are you’ll be greeted by the sight of waitresses, waiters and shopkeepers wrestling with black bags. Unfortunately, these bags often contain food which is perfectly edible. A lot of Durham cafes and bakeries prepare fresh food every morning and then discard the leftovers as the day draws to a close. Supermarkets are also guilty of possessing the same ‘bin happy’ mentality. Food has to be thrown out if it’s past its sell by date, even if it’s fine to consume in reality.

Olly Lammas: Kanye West’s ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’

Our new music editor, Olly Lammas, begins his column on d21 with a review of Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
You’re Kanye West on the night of 2009 MTV Video Music awards. You consider yourself to be the world’s most successful hip-hop rapper/producer, but last year was BAD: You split with your long term girlfriend and your Mother died while having plastic surgery (that you paid for). So you’re drinking heavily and Taylor Swift wins the award for best female video for “You Belong to Me”. A travesty in ...
