It is extremely difficult to reproduce such a popular piece of musical theatre as ‘How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying’ as a college musical – especially with the 1961 original earning seven Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and others, but this production was far from pretentious and had an air about it of college wit and modesty – TCMS made it their own.

To use the words of another reviewer; you really have to wonder what Vaughan Williams was on when he wrote ‘The Poisoned Kiss’. Written over a prolonged length of time, this rarely-performed opera is a curious mish-mash of songs, linked tenuously together by dialogue, creating a patchy and incoherent story line. The use of rhyming couplets throughout, although with no metre or structure, adds to the farcical feel of the piece.

On a freezing Friday evening, worse for wear at the end of the compulsory socialising of the first week of Epiphany, I went along to the Gala to see DULOG's ‘The Producers’. In all brutal honesty, I wasn’t expecting much. Well, I was expecting to want to leave at the interval to hurry home for Big Fat Gypsy Weddings. I genuinely did not expect the sheer magnitude of entertainment I experienced that evening. 'The Producers', a musical devoted to the comedic highs and lows of Broadway show-business seemed on face value an odd choice for the little town in which we live, whose idea of bohemian glitz and glamour can’t extend much further than a night out at Fabio’s. However, ‘The Producers’ did not fall short in providing an almighty spectacle of camp which certainly bitch-slapped Durham just when it was least expecting it.

The Durham Revue presented two confident shows last term. Durham21 enjoyed them both very much. Indeed we enjoyed the first show of Michealmas so much our reporter joined the Revue later that month! This was great for him- we’re so proud! But in terms of that high principle of student journalism, namely ‘independent reporting’ it made it all slightly awkward. So the way we dealt with this was by just not putting up the article at all. Sure.

But then we were jogged out of our pre-Christmas daze by another fantastic D-Rev show which made us feel so very guilty that we decided to come out from behind our wordpress fortress to own up to our faults and present the two reviews together- A Revue Review Double Whammy!

Tessa Coates is entertained by Stoppard's wit and David Head's extreme likeness to Lenin in the Michaelmas production of Travesties in the Assembly Rooms.
Tom Stoppard is not everyone’s cup of tea. He is desperately clever. Almost too clever. So clever infact that you feel you need a seminar before hand on all the topics that are going to be touched upon so that you’re ready when the jokes come flying at you and you can laugh genuinely and appreciatively instead of listening to the forced, barking laughs dotted about the theatre that tell you that the laugher understood that joke don’t you know.

This week Julia Chapman saw Romeo and Juliet and found a performance with both its stars and signals crossed.

Set in the intimate surroundings of the Hatfield Chapel, Romeo and Juliet, the inaugural production of the Star-Crossed Theatre Company, was an enjoyable but not a particularly compelling rendition. Attempting to convey a 1970’s theme, the performance lacked potency and excitement. While there were some actors who were more captivating
than others, and some moments that were more pleasurable to watch, the overall effect was disappointing.

Tash Cowley finds more than just a respite from the rain in DOE's production of Cosi Fan Tutte.

The Durham Opera Ensemble is a company which was a complete mystery to me until a few nights ago, when I braced the typically torrential Durham downpour to see Cosi Fan Tutte. I can honestly say that it was well worth getting drenched for; I was met with a fun show and a cast of bright and very talented performers. It is a story which leads its audience down crossed paths to meet lovers in disguise, morally ambiguous maids and love-and-lust-struck girls, and the cast of Cosi Fan Tutte gave a performance which was memorable and charming; not only this, but it brought some incredibly talented new faces to the Durham stage, which I think will be ones to watch.

So, Berthold Brecht, we meet at last. I have heard a great deal about you: your Marxism, the epic scale of your theatre, your Verfremdungseffekt (the defamiliarisation effect, whereby your productions strive to remind their audiences of their own artificiality, rather as these clauses are doing to this sentence); but this is the first time I have seen one of your shows in the all-singing, all-dancing DULOG flesh.

Dominic Wakeford reviews First Person Production's 'BLUEBIRD' and gets as excited as he can by a great cast in a "downright dull play".

Whenever I have taken my seat in the Assembly Rooms over the past couple of years, I have found myself impressed by the sheer range and ambition demonstrated by the DST, especially in their eclectic choice of plays to perform. For instance, how many university drama companies can boast productions of The Blue Room and Oedipus Rex within the same academic year? Once again, the DST (and First Person Productions) have delivered an evening of uniformly excellent acting, serving as a necessary reminder of just how much theatrical potential there is within Durham’s student drama scene, though this arguably deserves a better vehicle than Simon Stephens’ weak and ponderous Bluebird – a misstep at odds with the high-calibre of plays usually chosen.

Donnchadh O’Conaill examines CTC’s Macbeth under the microscope, Fellow’s Garden, 19/06/2010
Theatrically, in terms of its look and momentum, it was often striking
Here’s an oddity. CTC’s Macbeth, which will fly Durham’s banner across England and the more civilised parts of America this summer, has a clear, well-integrated vision, a strong aesthetic, moments of brilliant direction, and is well cast in the crucial roles; and yet I found it curiously underwhelming. The simplest way I can put this is that the production was lopsided.
Theatrically, in terms of its look and momentum, it ...
