“Well bugger me with a (student journalism) prize-winning leek”,
exclaims Roger Jeffery
skinning the competition… | we want YOU!

Skinning the competition… alive
The National Union of Students UK and the Daily Mirror have today announced the National Student Journalism Awards 2005 shortlist – and for the fifth consecutive year, durham21 has beaten off stern competition from a record number of entries to make the shortlist of five for the Best Student Website award! Having won the award outright in 2001, 2002 and 2003 – the first three years of the site’s existence – durham21 will now go head-to-head with 2004 victors The Warwick Boar as well as Sheffield Base, UniBalls and Pi Magazine. Today’s announcement also sees durham21’s Going Out editor Chris Prior nominated for the Best Student Critic shortlist of five, a fine accomplishment indeed. The overall winners will be announced at a glittering piss-up on November 12th at the Marriot Hotel in West India Quay.

Your award-winning student website needs YOU!
The nominations come at an exciting time for durham21, as we look to seriously perk up the site with superior content and a fresh, innovative new design. If you are interested in being a part of that vision and help us realise the true potential of our humble website, then now is the time to get in touch with us! Come hither all ye writers, photographers, webdesigners, coders, and marketing people. Not only is durham21 the University’s only editorially and financially independent news source (and a veritable not-for profit, charity donating, all-singing-all-dancing media source at that) – but it is also the ideal vehicle for you to develop your skills, as some of our former writers who have been gone on to write for likes of The Guardian, The NME and The Crack can attest. So what are you waiting for? Come and have a chat with us about what you want to do! Just drop in at one of our weekly meetings (Sunday 6pm Kingsgate) or email the applicable person from this list here.

Farewell for now and wish us luck,

Well done Barney, Roger & everyone else! Fingers crossed…

By the way, Roger, did you want to be buggered with a leak or a leek? I’m genuinely confused.

On the ol’ improving the website front, could you make more space for slightly older articles? If 3 articles get put up in quick succession, you have to click through other links to find the relatively recent 3rd one.

Seriously though, it’s quite an achievement mate; I am raising a glass of sherry to you as I type.

It’s all about playing the system – it’s good to
see the judges don’t do what the Tory Party
do and refuse to select the really old ones
    once in a while.

As for the leek and the sherry, any more
offers? We have the basis for a rudimentary
alcoholic casserole at the very least.

Do we have a noms cupboard? That’d be a bit tragic.

Thanks thanks thanks to all of last year’s editors and writers -we doubled durham21′s readership over 2004-5, and I know that Roger and Hollie will continue the good work.

    Right, back to work! X

Good work guys! I would wish the best of luck with the award itself, except that you can win through being the best, not the luckiest.
