Durham abc | def | ghi | jkl | mno | pqrs | tuv | wxyz

THE ANGEL INN
53 Crossgate
Tel 0191 386 5561

At the crest of Crossgate hill, this unusually tall pub is as goth in its clientele as it is in appearance. Young locals crowd in for the cheap booze and the angry jukebox. If it’s rah-escape you’re after, this is the place.

THE BIG JUG
88 Claypath
Tel 0191 384 8354
Welcoming to students, and handily placed near several top notch curry houses and restaurants. Good for the footie and an upper floor available for rental. And what a potentially hilarious name, eh? Well, for a week or so…
COACH & EIGHT
Bridge House, Framwellgate Bridge
Tel 0191 386 3284

The beer isn’t cheap in here, especially on nights when they’ve got the footie on the big screen. But otherwise one of the more spacious, modern-looking pubs in Durham with a dancefloor for special nights.

THE COLPITTS
Hawthorn Terrace
Tel 0191 386 9913

Snuggled away in the Viaduct area, this place has no option but to welcome students and ageing locals alike. A good old fashioned pub to appeal to the ale suppers amongst you.

COURT INN
Court Lane
0191 384 7350

Cheap food here, but generally not really a cool student hang-out, unless you live nearby and just fancy a cheeky pint. Quite close to the Union though, which is handy, but then the prison’s even closer…

THE DUN COW
37 Old Elvet
0191 386 9219

Bit trickier to find this one, located as it is further on from Old Shire Hall and the medical centre. Fits in well into Durham’s ‘olde worlde’ atmosphere.

FIGHTING COCKS
4 South Street
0191 383 6971

If there’s one pub in Durham you won’t visit during your time here, it’ll be this one. The hang out for the local party goers at the weekend, if they get even a sniff of your ‘studentness’ you could find yourself in a pretty sticky spot. They’ve redone the sign and put some flowers out front. But don’t be conned.

THE HALF MOON INN
New Elvet
0191 383 6981

Ales aplenty in here; another hang out for the older gents and the odd lecturer has been discovered drinking themselves silly too. So make sure you’ve kept to your deadlines before sauntering carelessly in!

HOGSHEAD ALE HOUSE
58 Saddler Street
0191 386 4134

One of the trendy pub chains. Very popular with the students who can’t be arsed heading for a college bar, and the locals cram in too at weekends. Good beer and the offers on food are impressive if you can get a seat.

JIMMY ALLEN’S
19-21 Elvet Bridge
0191 375 7574

One of Durham’s latest additions, this wicked bar/cafe is run on several cavernous floors, cut into Elvet Bridge. Spooky and elegant, this is one of the best places for fancier drinks. Not cheap, but a nice reduction for students and usefully close to Klute if you want to make a ‘night’ of it.

LACUNA LOUNGE
23 North Rd
0191 384 7750

Brand spanking new and in a weird position just in front of the bus station. This used to be a run down amusements arcade, but it’s been souped up and is a great place for a drink if you’re off to Rixies. With burger and chips for £2 you may be seeing me in there quite a bit too. You lucky cherubs.

MARKET TAVERN
Market Place
0191 386 2069

One of Durham’s oldest and best loved pubs this, and you can see why. Great atmosphere and drinks, and it’s right in the middle of the city centre. Just don’t get trapped in by a rugby social when you’re trying to discuss student website matters.

THE NEW INN
Church Street
0191 374 6901

Incredibly busy nearly all the time, but especially around lunch time when students pile in from the library or the science site. Little fuss here: cheap food, cheap alcohol and big screen footie. Get yourself one of their Yellow Cards and it all becomes even cheaper.

O’NEILLS
Claypath
0191 384 8618

Part of the Irish bar chain, with a big screen and lots of room to maneouvre. Not the hottest property in town for students, but worth a visit. The Big Jug and plenty of restaurants are nearby too so you could make a good evening of it on Claypath.

THE SADDLE MARKET
North Road
0191 386 5307

One of the least glamorous establishments you can find in Durham. Mainly a local hang out, but why they inflict the Saddle Market on themselves we will never know. Like the Fighting Cocks, you’ll probably never set foot in here, and you won’t regret it.

SAINTS BAR
Back of Silver St., Market Vaults
0191 386 7700

One of the best kept secrets in Durham, mainly because it’s so difficult to find. Great food upstairs which won’t break the bank, comfy sofas, beer in straight glasses and the odd cocktail to boot. Not cheap, but definitely worth a visit even if only a brief one. Growing in popularity with the locals too.

THE SHAKESPEARE TAVERN
63 Saddler Street
0191 386 9709

Perhaps the tiniest pub in town and generally packed with old codgers waffling about the war. Essential entertainment then, even if you won’t pick up a partner here. Pipe and beard required.

THE SWAN & THREE CYGNETS
Old Elvet Bridge
0191 384 0242

Great when the sun’s out, with its outside terrace almost spilling onto the street. The beer’s somewhat limited but it’s snug and wallet-friendly at least. The place to take your stingey friend who owes you a round or two. Often packed with sporty-types after a hard day’s slog on the pitch/river/court etc.

THE VICTORIA HOTEL
Hallgarth St.
0191 386 5269

Small and old-fashioned from the outside, with enough whisky to sink the Titanic on the inside. Worth it for a quieter beverage, and you can pop over to Ricardo’s for a bite to eat or even end up staying the night there if you can’t be bothered to walk home.

YATES’ WINE LODGE
North Rd.
0191 384 1775

Pretty much run-of-the-mill stuff here. Not very student friendly, choosing to welcome instead many a 50 year old scantily-clad woman with streaming eyeliner and dangerously sharp heels. There’s just no need to go to Yates’ with the abundance of better places around.

YE OLD ELM TREE
12 Crossgate
0191 386 4621

/>One of the best little pubs around, with a homely welcoming atmosphere and plenty of draught beers to warm you to your cockles. Non-confrontational and cosy, which more than makes up for the lack of big screen tv. Could you pick a better local?

With Newcastle being quite a large city, we only have space to offer you a few tried and tested establishments…

Newcastle abc | def | ghi | jkl | m-z

BAJA BEACH CLUB
Quayside, Gateshead
0191 477 6205

Bar/Club that’s well worth a visit during those fresher explorations. Not all that ‘beachy’, but lots of room to manouevre be it on the dancefloor or the sidelines, lots of your favourite cheesey tunes and student-friendly.

BAR OZ
Percy Street
0191 261 2607
At the top end of the shopping street, this vaguely Australian themed bar is mightily close to the Newcastle Students Union, so has no option but to be welcoming to students and relatively cheap.
CHASE
13-15 Newgate Street, NE1
0191 245 0055

Newcastle’s hippest bar, it is worth checking out for the pretty people if nothing else. Expensive drinks and long queues.

THE CLUNY
36 Lime St, Ouseburn
0191 230 4474

Containing a bar, a cafe and a gig venue all in one, The Cluny easily makes up for its inaccessibility. It is situated under the Byker Bridge and is great for a pint, a snack or a bit of aural pleasure.

FLARES
16-18 Newgate Street, NE1
0191 269 3021
Big hair, bell bottoms and cheesy music – well, what do you expect from a 70′s bar?

THE FORTH HOTEL
Pink Lane
0191 232 6478

Just up the road from the train station, this is somewhat of a hidden gem popular with the locals. Beer in straight glasses at affordable prices? Yes please. Not bad food either.

GENGIS
Grainger Street
0191 230 2308

Suitable for the wealthier student, this upmarket cocktail bar has flaming torches outside and a classy interior. Worth a trip but it’ll hardly become a regular haunt for students owing to the prices.

THE LOUNGE
8 Neville St
0191 261 2211

Another swish joint just down from the train station. Again quite pricey, but comfy seats and a few more drink choices than your Wetherspoons or Yates’.

THE QUAYSIDE
The Close, Quayside
0191 221 0828

A typical Wetherspoons pub located on the banks of the Tyne. Perfect for the poor studenty types owing to ridiculously cheap alcohol and food. Other than that it’s just the same as the one you’ve got at home.

YATES’ WINE LODGE
Grainger Street
0191 261 5979

Run-of-the-mill but cheap and cheerful. Keep clear of the one in Durham, and if you really love Yates’ make your way here.

hi lc – Saints has been around in Durham for ever – it’s down by the river, behind the market square. Go down the steps in the far corner of the market square as if heading for the bowling alley, but turn left instead of right when you get to the river bank and it’s right in front of you.

I’m a ‘local’ (19) and agree with what Chris said (June 19th).
I work at Yates wine lodge on north road, Durham, and I thought it was rotten what your opinion was about it.
Yates is excellent value and has high-quality food, so you can’t just slag it off because of the small minority of its punters. Also, your ‘not very student friendly’??? We offer a bloody student card with a que jump and 25% off for students! The staff don’t even get one of those cards, so you should do some research and maybe even – god forbid you do this, mind – venture inside the wine lodge and see what its all about before you criticise. Its not that all students are not welcome here it is because of its bad reputation, which affects all north road licensees.
So if you are a rah-rah complete with daddy’s credit card, scarf, terrible laugh and boasting about your yachts and porches, stay in your dorm because Durham welcomes nobody of that category.

Personally i’d say your just showing you don’t like Durham in general, as you’ve slagged off every pub there is. Next time take time out to actually venture the bars, and not look for 50yr old men, or whether or not its student friendly towards YOU!!
Theres more to Durham then you and Daddys plastic!
I’ll even take you myself and introduce to the bars and sure that Durham can be a good day or night experiences whether or not a pathetic looser like yourself agrees!

Alfonsos opinion on Durham pubs is spot on. He has named the six best, though I would add the Victoria to his list.

The Fighting Cocks is OK – the student night (Wednesdays) is unnecessary, though – it’s OK for a drink any time of the week.

    The Colpitts is great, too!

I really like the Fighting Cocks student night on Wednesdays. The lad who DJs is really fit.

They seem to be trying to change the negative reputation of the pub.

I think the student night at the Fighting Cocks (Wed) is quite a jolly night out. I like the fact the music doesnt blare into my sensitive ear drums and i can chat to my chums. Its got a nice atmosphere and picks up more later on in the evening, say about 11. The music is a mixture between lounge and some that you can causally bop your head too. Oo and theres free shots, who can resist.
